The Girl and the Demon

Theme: Cat

Rin hummed nonsense as she skipped down the street.

She had just escaped the dreaded, Jaken-sama villain, and was now meandering about the illustrious roads of her beloved, grand country.

Rin smiled as she saw a long flight of stone stairs, with a pagoda styled archway with the name ‘Higurashi’ on it. Her face was suddenly illuminated by an all too innocent smile. Rin took the steps two at a time, wandering up the hill of steps to see where she would go.

The walk was long, steep, and just the thing Rin enjoyed most.

When the steps ended, Rin pouted, thinking the fun was over far too soon, until she noticed something out of the corner of her eye that made her lips to lift even higher on her face, and a sweet squeal escape her throat.

A big, lazy, fat cat.

It was lying in the grass, absorbing the warm sun of the day cleaning its paws and face lethargically. Most of his fur was a rich cream color, with blotches of mocha on its right front paw and left back paw, as well as on its tummy. There were blotches of chocolate coloring in numerous areas along his rotund body, and black on the tip of its tail, and two spots on its back.

“Awe!” Rin squealed out in her excitement. The cats eyes shot open on full alert, but it was too late.

Rin quickly seized the cat up into her arms and squeezed it against her chest tightly, overpowering and surprising the sleepy cat.

“Oh, aren’t you just the cutest little thing! Rin wants to keep you forever!” Rin exclaimed loudly, and the cat only muffled a ‘meow’ against her chest.

Rin scowled then, and clutched him in her hands at arm’s length. “Are you saying Rin cannot have you? Because that is not very nice Mr. The Cat.”

“Mo-ow. . . “ was all he said, clearly confused by the stranger holding him.

“Hello there.”

Surprised, the young girl tugged the chucky cat back to her chest and spun around, and she saw a very strange lady.

She had big, unusual, dark blue eyes, long, wildly curling black tresses, and pale skin. She wore a sun dress similar to Rin’s, except the gorgeous lady’s was blue with a white belt and straps, and Rin’s was all orange.

“Oh, hello! Rin would like to know if you know who this handsome Mr. The Cat belongs to.” Rin grinned, and the pretty girl grinned and giggled a little.

“Well, Rin, I am technically his owner. I’m Kagome, and his name is Buyo, and he’s our family’s cat.”  Kagome explained, and Rin furrowed her brows and looked down into the large eyes of the cat in her arms.

“So you belong to this pretty girl, Mr. Buyo The Cat?” Ruin asked simply.

“ Meow.” Buyo replied, tilting his downy head off to one side and staring at Rin.

“Oh, well Rin is sorry for trying to take you away from your Mama-sama!” Rin laughed, and Kagome giggled lightly.

“Would you like some tea, Rin? My mama and I just made some, and we always make too much.” Kagome offered, and Rin’s big brown eyes became wide with excitement.

“Can Rin hold Mr. Buyo The Cat?” Rin asked, bouncing in her white, heeled Mary Jane’s.

Kagome nodded her head. “Of course you can! Buyo loves any attention.”

The two girls slowly made their way to a big, three story home, though its beauty was lost on Rin, for she was lost in loving on Buyo.

As they walked into the kitchen through the back door, Rin looked up, and tilted her head.

There were three men at a big table, one was human, and the other two were demons.

The demons had shinny looking, thick red hair and emerald eyes, and swishing tales that made Rin want to walk up and pet them.

The human boy looked a lot like the gorgeous lady Kagome, but he had almost black eyes, tinted brown, and not blue.

“Eri, Shippo, Souta, this is Rin, Rin, this is my step-father, Eri and my brothers, Shippo and Souta.” Kagome announced warmly, politely making the simple introductions.

The human boy, whom Kagome had motioned to as Souta, stared at Rin, his mouth hanging open.

Shippo, the demon boy, laughed uncomfortable and slapped his little brothers back. “Excuse him, Rin, he’s not use to being around pretty girls.”

“Well that makes no sense to Rin, since he lives with one.” Rin prattled matter-of-factly, and then proceeded to nuzzle Buyo’s nose with her own.

Shippo laughed. “She’s our sister, she doesn’t count.”

Rin looked up at that and turned her head to the side once again, Buyo mimicking her actions.

“This Rin doesn’t understand,” Rin said, then turned to Kagome as she scrunched her nose and tweaked her lisp to one side, “You looked old enough to count to Rin.”

Kagome fought to remain in control, but was unsuccessful and laughed loudly, and for a moment no one else got the joke Rin had inadvertently made.

“Oh!” Eri exclaimed, “I get it!”

Rin sighed, clearly not seeing her own joke, and handed Buyo to the calming Kagome. “Rin is bored, Rin is going to go explore. Bye-bye, pretty lady Kagome, bye-bye her family people. Valediction.” And with that, Rin skipped out of the kitchen, and outside.

Eri laughed. “Well that was a strange human.”

“Your tellin’ me!” Shippo laughed, and waved his hand in front of the still dazed Souta.

Souta shook his head and swallowed the quickly pooling saliva in his agape mouth. “She was . . . wow . . .”

“Uh-oh,” Kagome laughed, holding a hand to Souta’s forehead, “He’s falling guys, quick, take him hiking and hunting and make him grow a beard to snap him out of it!"

They all laughed, except Souta, who simply sat there glaring at his sister before he pushed her hand away.

“Shut up, Kagome.” He huffed, and the other three in the kitchen only laughed more.

Then a thin, tall, green haired and yellow eyed demon popped his head into their house, panting.

“Please, have you seen a young girl, wearing an orange dress? She says Rin instead of I or me?”

Kagome nodded her head. “She was just here, playing with my cat.”

“Oh!” The demon exclaimed, taking a fist full of his hair and tugging on it, “My lord is going to kill me!” and just as quickly as the demon had showed up, he was gone again.

Kagome laughed as she turned to the demon half of her family. “And you guys say humans are the weirder species!”
